ITEM#-003: Trapped in the Terminal

Stabilization Status: IGNOTUS (Unclassified/Unknown)
Security Clearance: LEVEL 3 / SECRET
Facility Placement: Level 2.5: Compentance (Under Dr. Aris Thorne's Permission)

Stabilization Criteria

The two physical sub-components of ITEM#-003 must be kept under a strict Spatial Disconnection Protocol. ITEM#-003-1 (The Floppy Disk) must remain locked flat inside a heavy lead-lined storage locker within Insulated Server Vault 01. ITEM#-003-2 (The Marconi TV Assembly) must be permanently anchored at a minimum linear distance of twenty-five (25) meters away, housed in a separate Faraday isolation grid under Level 2.5 surveillance blocks.

The two sub-components may only be brought within a shared proximity loop during authorized testing sequences overseen directly by Chief Arthur P. If the components are brought within fifteen (15) meters of each other outside of a test grid, the primary resonance frequency will automatically activate, causing localized terminal monitors to flicker into an unprompted Reverse Cognitive Read-Out state.

During active hardware-loop testing, personnel must wear thick electrical hazard gear and are strictly forbidden from maintaining visual contact with the Marconi mirror-lid display for longer than three (3) consecutive minutes. If a terminal under diagnostics displays an unprompted electric load surge or notes a shadow entity trajectory under 2 meters, engineers must execute an immediate manual breaker cut to completely kill localized room electricity before cognitive extraction loops can stabilize.

Description

ITEM#-003 (Cognitive Resonance Vector): The primary anomaly does not reside natively in any singular physical object; rather, ITEM#-003 designates an intangible, self-replicating telepathic data frequency currently bound between two distinct components. The phenomenon requires a dual-stage hardware bridge to interact with baseline reality, utilizing a modern magnetic storage medium (designated ITEM#-003-1) as its primary data anchor, and a vintage analog vacuum-tube receiver (designated ITEM#-003-2) as its specular display vessel. If either sub-component is separated by a distance greater than 15 meters, the primary resonance frequency enters a dormant stasis cycle until the hardware loop is re-established.

ITEM#-003-1 (The Floppy Disk) Primarily consists of a standard 3.5-inch, black plastic magnetic storage floppy disk manufactured by Dysan Corporation, identifiable by a generic burgundy-bordered paper indexing label affixed to the top face. Externally, the disk conforms to late–20th-century civilian specifications, including tactile shutter geometry, spindle aperture dimensions, and nominal magnetic media thickness as measured by non-destructive metrology. The casing shows no deformation, corrosion, or manufacturing defects beyond typical handling wear consistent with archival-grade storage. Internally, the magnetic shutter array and leader tracks present expected continuity under standard optical inspection and bench-level sensor checks conducted without electrical activation.

The anomalous behavior is time-locked to insertion. The disk does not trigger observable effects during storage, transport, or passive inspection; however, the moment ITEM#-003-1 is seated into a functional disk-drive terminal and the drive’s head-engagement mechanism begins normal alignment, the anomalous event occurs at the exact millisecond of insertion confirmation. At this threshold, personnel observing the terminal experience a brief perceptual desynchronization in which on-screen text elements appear to “re-stabilize” to a prior configuration, suggesting an internally computed loop rather than simple display corruption. Concurrently, diagnostic read timing deviates by a reproducible offset consistent with a short-lived cognitive-loop stabilization window Physically, the disk exhibits a repeatable increase in required insertion force by a small but measurable margin—insignificant to the casing itself—suggesting the magnetic shutter array momentarily biases alignment against the drive’s latch tolerance. The effect dissipates immediately after removal. No permanent residue, debris, or media degradation has been documented following controlled test cycles, indicating the anomaly does not manifest as chemical or structural damage to the medium. Behaviorally, ITEM#-003-1’s interaction is best characterized as “responsive to functional activation,” with the terminal’s normal sensing and head-initiation sequence serving as the trigger. When the drive is not powered and no electronic handshake occurs, the disk behaves indistinguishably from a compliant archival floppy.

ITEM#-003-2 (The Display Vessel): A heavily modified 1936 mahogany-cased Marconi 702 television receiver unit, recovered by facility procurement teams from an undocumented residential site. Structurally, the unit represents an exceedingly rare, pre-World War II technical architecture featuring a high-voltage Emiscope cathode-ray tube oriented entirely vertically inside the wooden chassis. To view a broadcast transmission, operators do not look at the tube directly; instead, they must raise the heavy, hinged wooden top lid of the cabinet and look down into a highly polished, silver-backed glass mirror fixed at a precise 45-degree angle. The chassis has been retrofitted with an air-gapped co-axial input ribbon array designed by Chief Arthur P. to bridge the vacuum-tube circuits directly into the auxiliary floppy drive housing ITEM#-003-1.

The specific mechanical design of the Marconi 702 is critical to stabilizing the anomaly's data output. Standard modern computer monitors utilize electronic grid matrices that instantly burn out or suffer terminal hardware liquidation if forced to process the raw, telepathic signal generated by the floppy disk. ITEM#-003-2's analog vacuum-tube system, however, successfully dampens this feedback loop. Through the Reverse Cognitive Read-Out process, the incoming data stream completely hijacks the Emiscope tube's vertical electron gun. This forces the device to bypass all baseline radio frequencies and project a series of bright, glowing monochrome text characters directly onto the vertical screen substrate, reflecting them flawlessly into the mirror lid for human observation at a fixed rate of 45 characters per second.

Because the operator must look directly into a literal mirror to decode the text stream mapping their live conscious thoughts and childhood memories, a catastrophic visual paradox occurs during the testing phase. After exactly 4 minutes of visual focus, the glowing green text string appearing on the glass mirror begins detailing the exact physical coordinates and posture of a tall, faceless shadow silhouette crouching directly behind the investigator's chair. Because the mirror reflects the real-time physical space of the containment cell, the investigator is systematically forced to witness the shadow entity crawl closer inside the reflection, even though physically turning around to scan the room reveals an entirely empty chamber. Maintaining eye contact with the specular reflection past the 7-minute threshold triggers immediate, irreversible neural burnout, leaving the subject a rigid, un-aging limestone shell while the floppy disk records their consciousness.

Addendum 003-i.9: Local Info

"All handling of ITEM#-003 at Site-42 is logged as “High-Interference Offline Media” within Foundation anom-objects registers and cross-referenced to access rosters for Insulated Server Vault 01. Chief Arthur P. Dr. Aris Thorne requires dual sign-off for each insertion window: one for electrical safety compliance and one for anomaly-status declaration. Generated/Random MTF(s) personnel maintain a sealed perimeter around the diagnostic bay and are not permitted to operate the drive interface, even under emergency conditions, due to repeated reports of attention-lock persistence in observers." - Written by Dr. Aral Johnson
